SOLAR PROJECT
The Solar Project and its Phases
Peace Lutheran currently owns three homes near the church, which they make available for Hilltop neighbors in danger of being priced out of the neighborhood. Peace received major grants to enable construction of a small, 754 sq. ft. home behind one of those existing homes. This house, called a Salt Box, is a two-story home with living room and full kitchen, two bedrooms and 1-1/2 baths. The slanted roof (see right photo) is oriented to the south, to take advantage of solar power. St. Mark’s has now outfitted the house with solar panels, and a family took residence in February, 2023.
Phase Three awaits us: We plan to install the second half of St. Mark's array of panels, and at the same time to install solar panels on another of Peace's housing units.

February 2024 brought the second phase into life: While Peace Lutheran was busy refurbishing one of its homes with more efficient heating, insulation, and windows, St. Mark's supplied solar power to the house. At the same time, St. Mark's installed the first half of its own solar power grid. Tacoma Public Utilities became a key partner for the Shalom Project in this phase, and TPU's grant will continue to make phase three possible. (See left photo.)
TPU'S PARTNERSHIP
This project was made possible with funding support from Evergreen Options, a Tacoma Power program funded by utility customers who support new renewable energy in the Pacific Northwest. If you purchase electricity from Tacoma Power, you can support renewable energy by enrolling in Evergreen Options at MyTPU.org/Evergreen.
The Shalom Project is delighted to have been chosen by TPU's Evergreen Options for a substantial grant, which has helped our dreams come to fruition! Thank you, TPU!
